Coffee from Tarrazú, Costa Rica

The balanced and dark coffee from the Tarrazú region of Costa Rican is a coffee we have often struggled to source. Quality has been a problem for us but now we seem to have a more reliable source that is able to provide us both coffees from co-operatives and single farms from the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica.

About Costa Rican coffee

Costa Rica had been growing Arabica based coffee since it was originally introduced in 1720. From there it spread and Costa Rica was the first Central American country to start a formal export of coffee. By 1821 there were over 17,000 producing coffee trees, and by 1860 they have started exporting to Northern America. To this day coffee remains an important part of the Costa Rican economy, and many other Central American countries have followed Costa Rica into coffee production because of the success they saw there.

Today Costa Rica is the fifth largest coffee supplier of the American Continent and the ninth in the world, coffee is Costa Rica's third biggest export, and is responsible for employing 28% of the population, and 20% of the GNP.

A bit about the coffee we have

The Tarrazú region of Costa Rica consistently produces the best coffees of the country. The coffee from this region is often compared to coffee of the region like those from Antigua, and Jamaica.

This region is famous for having the fine soils at the highest altitudes so most of the best Costa Rican coffees are grown in this region near San Hose. The structure of the coffee industry in Costa Rica does not promote lots from one estate. Instead coffees from co-operative processing plants are the recognized norm. This limits Costa Rica's coffee in variance, but the production is good and dependable as a result.

This can be seen in the balanced nature of the Tarrazú
