Kenya
Kenya is a geographically diverse country. In the East, there is a coastline of 536 km. Of course, this coastline is along the Indian Ocean. And then roughly in the middle is Mount Kenya, which is almost 5200 masl, the highest altitude in the country. Kenya shares two of Africa’s largest lakes: Lake Turkana and the famous Lake Victoria.
Kenyan Coffee
Even though the birthplace of Arabica is just to the north of Kenya, coffee was introduced as a crop. First by French missionaries in 1893, who introduced coffees from Réunion (Bourbon), and then by the British on a larger scale, who mainly used coffee varieties from Brazil.
Several Scott Agricultural Laboratories (Scott Labs) cultivars were introduced to Kenya, with SL28 becoming the cultivar most associated with Kenya.
Many coffee pundits sing the praises of Kenyan coffee. Well known for its good bright berry and fruit-like acidity with an accompanying sweetness. In addition, the complexity of their coffees has made them world-renowned
While coffee remains one of the most important exports to Kenya to this day, tea is the drink of choice for Kenyans.
Kamacharia Farmers Cooperative Society
The Kamacharia Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) is a producer-driven organization based in Murang’a County, Kenya. Established in 1993, the cooperative has grown steadily. Today (2024) it encompasses over 1,300 active smallholder members. Member farmers bring their coffee cherries to one of the cooperative’s four wet mills, including the well-known Kagumoini Washing Station.
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Kamacharia FCS is dedicated to producing high-quality coffee while promoting sustainable farming practices. The cooperative invests in programs supporting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), which help boost productivity and quality1. Additionally, they focus on sustainable water management, ensuring that both the farms and mills operate efficiently and responsibly1.
Community Support and Development
The cooperative also plays a vital role in the local community. A portion of the cooperative’s fees is allocated to a fund that assists with school fees, emergencies, and farm implements1. This support helps improve the livelihoods of the farmers and their families, fostering a sense of community and shared success.
Consuming coffee from the Kamacharia Farmers Cooperative Society means supporting a community dedicated to sustainable and ethical farming practices.
Kenyan Kagumoini AB Lot 1265
The coffee from Kagumoini Washing Station includes SL28, Ruiru 11, and a small portion of Batian, grown in deep, well-drained red volcanic soil, at an elevation of approximately 1750masl. After picking, the cherries undergo a fully washed processing method, which involves the complete removal of the outer skin and pulp during the washing and depulping stages. After the cherries are pulped, they are placed in tanks for fermentation overnight, washed the following morning, soaked and then before being carefully dried on raised beds.
