The DiFluid R2 Extract is a affordable refractometer design for coffee analysis by Digitize Fluid.
DiFluid
DiFluid, or Digitize Fluid, established in 2021 in Shenzhen, China, by Linus Peng, a Ph.D., specializes in refractometer technology. Their most popular device is specifically designed for testing coffee TDS. All their products are self-developed and certified by domestic and international authorities.
Driven by innovation, DiFluid makes a concerted effort to examine the old and outdated and bring new technology into the space. While completing his Ph.D., Linus became convinced that instead of using accepted 1-dimensional light sensors, the newer light sensing technology could be used in a new device, with the power of a smartphone behind it.
The result was R1. It proved to be less fragile, faster, and more accurate than the products the industry had considered the standard for years. Furthermore, this technology was significantly more affordable.

Based on the success of the R1, the R2 is 32% bigger and has a higher resolution, allowing for a higher density of information. It supports multimodes, including Standard, Multi, and Stable.
The R2 incorporates several advanced features:
- Microlocalibration layer: The R2 uses a microcalibration layer that compensates for external factors and physical deformations that may occur due to temperature changes or undissolved particles. As a result, it produces an accurate and stable reading.
- 2DCMOS imaging sensor: Utilizing a calibrated 2D CMOS imaging sensor means misalignment is not an issue, and data collection is improved.
- Dual temperature sensors: To further remove external influences, dual temperature sensors are used to reduce interference. By compensating for the difference between the two separately placed temperature sensors, no matter what temperature the liquid is analysed, the result will be accurate.
- Nano-scale Hydrophobic Layer: The glass covering the sensor is coated with a nano-scale hydrophobic layer that minimizes the need to touch it. Thereby providing an extra layer of protection against scratches, extending the life of the unit.
- Waterproof and easy to clean: The R2 is IP67 water-resistant. Once finished testing, simply rinse the sample dish in water and wipe clean.”
How to use?
To use the R2 you need to download the DiFluid app. Once you have the app, here is a guide (it can change depending on the way you brew)
- Turn on device and pair.
- Select brew type.
- Enter in dose and yield.
- Add liquid to device using spoon (must be less than 40°C.)
- Press brew button on app.
- Press the test button.
- Wait and see if it reads.
- If it has not copied the EXT% calc add it.
