Peru

Peru is the western neighbour of Colombia. The country has a varied geography, making it very suitable for coffee growing. Peru has been growing coffee since the late 1800s. Smallholders typically produce most of Peru’s coffee, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, are Chanchamayo, the Amazonas and San Martin regions, and the southern highlands.

Lima Coffee

Lima Coffee was founded in 2016 by Rony Lavan Guerrero and several other coffee producers in Jaen. Rony had previously worked in quality control with one of Peru’s largest exporters and was very aware of the quality and potential some producers have. Rony saw these quality coffees being blended into large commercial lots. Convinced that the farmers could be better rewarded, Rony decided to set up a cooperative with a different structure. He did so by basing membership on cup quality.

Rony knew of areas and producers in Cajamarca who have high quality and approached them to buy their best-prepared coffees. The aim was to sell these lots as microlots to the US market. Cooperatives are typically formed by a group of producers whose goal it is to export their coffee as regional lots. Rony’s model is entirely based on quality and those producers that are more focused on quality.

Peruvian El Diamante

This El Diamante lot is a blend of day lots from various smallholder producers in the El Diamante area of the San Ignacio province in Northern Peru. These day lots were purposefully blended together based on cup profile, one typical of the area. A cup quality with pronounced acidity, notes of citrus fruits and lots of complexity. Producers in Northern Peru have their own hand pulping machine and fermentation tanks where they process the coffee before drying it on their patio or raised beds in their farms. The main variety grown in El Diamante is Caturra, with few producers planting anything else since rust isn’t a big problem yet, due to relatively new trees and the cool climate.

San Jose de Lourdes is an area with huge potential for quality with a relatively unique microclimate compared to other areas in Cajamarca, in El Diamante, for example, it has much higher rainfall and cooler climate, which contributes to a very complex and acidity driven cup profile.
