The 1Zpresso Q2 S Hand Coffee Grinder is the entry level full metal grinder offering from 1Zpresso.
Who is 1Zpresso
1Zpresso is a Taiwanese company founded by a group of coffee lovers with an engineering background. They are known to develop innovative manual coffee grinders with a passion for specialty coffee.
Compact and High-Quality
The Q2, which is the most lightweight, compact, and portable model produced by 1Zpresso, features an aluminium alloy build that is decidedly robust. While it is an upgrade of the Q1 (or Mini Q), its high-quality build distinguishes it from lesser grinders built from stainless steel and plastic.
Partially inspired by the brand’s larger J Series models, the 1Zpresso Q2 S boasts an ergonomically curved handle lever and wooden crank knob that lend it a pleasing aesthetic. Additionally, there is a quality leather anti-slip grip around the body’s centre with the 1Zpresso logo on it.
The machine’s catcher cup and hopper capacity is 20g. Thanks to its well-machined threads, the catcher cup is easy to screw on and off, contributing to the general feeling of satisfaction that using this grinder engenders.
Portable
One of the most attractive features of the Q2 S is how snugly it fits into an AeroPress chamber, making it easy to transport the two. This convenience is due to the solid reputation of the AeroPress as a versatile travel coffee maker.
Despite being predominantly made from sturdy steel and aluminium, the grinder weighs just 409g, with the only non-metallic parts being the wooden handle and plastic lid top. Standing 13.8 cm tall with a diameter of 4.6 cm, the handle can even be removed for more compact packing.
Additionally, the Q2 comes with a nice-looking fabric travel bag and a brush. The bag is spacious enough to hold a small bag of coffee beans or a brewer. All in all, the 1Zpresso Q2 is an excellent choice for those seeking a high-quality, compact, and portable manual coffee grinder.
Burrs and Stability
The Q2 manual coffee grinder boasts 38 mm conical steel burrs, offering superior grinding performance compared to ceramic burr grinders. These burrs can effortlessly grind any coffee beans, including oily beans and dense, light roasted beans. The Q2 comes with a heptagonal burr design for even faster and more efficient grinding
The Q2’s cylindrical body features a support bracket that secures the drive shaft, while the outer burrs screw into the bracket, resulting in less wobbling during grinding and more uniform particle size. Additionally, the Q2 S offers smoother grinding due to its dual-bearing shaft, a feature common to other 1Zpresso manual grinders.
Adjustments and recommended settings
To adjust the grinder, remove the catcher cup, allowing access to the grind adjustment wheel. The grinder has a stepped design with 30 adjustments per wheel rotation, which equates to three clicks per number.
To use the grinder effectively, turn the knob clockwise until it meets resistance, which is the zero point. However, it is important to note that the zero point isn’t restricted to one number, and it will change if you take the grinder apart to clean it. The numbers indicate a starting point and can help in recording your settings. For instance, if you are searching for setting 21, that’s two complete rotations and one number, or 63 clicks.
To simplify the process, there is a QR card you can scan to download a grind settings chart. Additionally, the manufacturer recommends specific settings for various brewing methods, such as:
- Espresso (number 6-10)
- Moka pot (number 13)
- AeroPress (number 15, we believe 8-17,depending on dose)
- Pour-Over (numbers 18-22)
- French Press Coffee (number 24) and
- Cold Brew (number 28).
These settings provide a guide, and you can adjust finer or coarser based on your preferences.
