Colombia
Early Growth
Coffee arrived in Colombia with Jesuit missionaries around 1790. Over time, the crop spread through the northeastern highlands as smallholder families began planting it as a dependable cash crop.
Later, in 1835, Colombia made its first recorded export when about 2,500 pounds left the port of Cúcuta for the United States
Shifts in Farming
By the late 1800s, large haciendas dominated production. However, civil unrest, foreign debt, and falling prices in the early 1900s brought that model to an end. As a result, land ownership fragmented, and small family farms became the standard.
In 1927, growers formed the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC) to support farmers and stabilise the industry.
Culturally, coffee farming has long been family‑run. Most farms are small, and hand‑harvesting remains the norm, shaping the country’s reputation for clean, well‑sorted coffees.
JardÃn Antioquia
JardÃn sits in the southwest of Antioquia, about 137 km from MedellÃn. It lies where the San Juan River meets the Western Cordillera, with elevations from 1,400 to 3,200 metres. The town rests in a narrow valley shaped by steep ridgelines and river gorges.
Climate here is subtropical highland: steady rain, moderate humidity, and cool temperatures at altitude. As a result, cherries ripen slowly, which increases sweetness and bean density.
Antioquia’s volcanic soils are rich in organic matter and drain well—ideal for coffee. Across the department, coffee grows between about 1,650 and 2,200 metres. JardÃn’s terrain often pushes farms toward the upper end of that range, where slower ripening enhances complexity.
Colombian Fincamogos Typica
Fincamigos was founded in 2018 after the collapse of a local cooperative. The project created new jobs while focusing on quality‑driven coffee production.
The farm sits between 1,700 and 2,000 metres. This height slows cherry maturation and supports both acidity and sweetness.
Fincamigos grows a wide range of varieties: Gesha, Laurina, Typica, Sudan Rume, Tabi, Java, SL28 and Cenicafé selections.
