Costa Rica
Costa Rica has been producing coffee since the early 1800s. The first coffee exported was to Panama in 1820, although that coffee was bound of England. In 1825, the government exempted coffee production from certain taxes in an effort to promote the crop. As a result, from 1846 to 1890, it was almost the sole export from Costa Rica.
This gave Costa Rica an advantage in the area since coffee production infrastructure was well established by the early 1900s. Assisting with the growth of coffee production throughout Costa Rican and adding more cultivars and processes.
In the early 2000s, there was an increase in micro mills, that helped promote specialty coffees.
Doña Rita
Doña Rita’s journey in coffee spans four generations. Her family’s passion for coffee runs deep. Her father inherited a small piece of land and expanded their holdings through hard work and sacrifice. Coffee has been crucial for the family’s progress.
In 2019, Doña Rita discovered Bean Voyage. She started training with them to process her coffee, seeking better prices. This marked a new phase in her coffee journey, sustaining a family business with deep roots.
In 2020, Doña Rita processed her coffee at her farm, Finca Pergujal. The full honey lot dried on raised beds in the sun. Conservation of natural resources is vital to her. She dedicates part of her land to forest and fauna protection. In 2019, she grew around 180 native tree species between coffee trees, providing habitats for birds like goldfinches and toucans.
Doña Rita’s land has volcanic soil due to its proximity to Poás Volcano. She believes the soil, altitude, temperature, rainfall, new coffee varieties, and family love contribute to the high-quality coffee they produce.
