Kenyan Coffee

The Keyan Coffee industry goes back to colonial days. The British bought coffee from Brazil originally to plan there but eventually started developing their own varieties. The country’s geography especially around Mount Kenyan and Kilimanjaro naturally produces great coffees.

Kabngetuny farmers co-operative

Kabngetuny (or Kapng’etuny, as it is spelt in Kenya) Co-operative Society processes and markets coffee for small-scale farmers in Kericho Highlands, Kenya, since 1985. It’s surrounded by Nandi hills and Mau forest at 2000m altitude, ideal for coffee varieties like K7 and SL28.

Coffee and Impact

The society manages 360,000 coffee trees, exporting high-quality Arabica coffee grades like AA and PB. It aims to lead in quality coffee production, empower members, and improve living standards.

Membership and Operations

With 955 members and 790 active, the society processes over 2.6 million kilograms of coffee, supported by a diverse team and an annually elected board.

The society aims to:

  • Disseminate knowledge of good agricultural practices.
  • Ensure high quantity and quality coffee production at reduced costs.
  • Alleviate poverty and improve the living standards of members.
  • Incorporate all coffee production, processing, and marketing efforts to meet international standards.
  • Adhere to certification codes of conduct and standards.
  • Uphold integrity and transparency.

Fully washed, cleaned, and sun-dried on raised African beds.

Characteristics:
Good complexity, lemonade, black currant, blood orange and a sweet finish.
Roast used:
Gentle soak to TP, and accelerate into browning and then into first, where the roast is slowed to extract fruit flavours.
